In Africa, mini grids have been identified as a key platform to address critical electrification shortages. Creating successful mini grid ecosystems beyond pilot projects is now the focus of African governments facing severe shortages especially for their off-grid populations. Africa has the largest share of planned mini grids. World Bank data shows that more than 4,000 mini grids are currently being planned. The two largest markets for planned mini grids in Africa are Senegal and Nigeria – these two countries alone account for about 2,000 of the 4,000 planned mini grids in Africa.
